Groups embark on a week-long adventure in which charting courses and singing chanties are parts of the learning experience—immersive, dynamic, challenging, and novel. Expansive horizons replace walls. Friendships and memories are made that will last a lifetime.

Activities

Sailing, hiking, singing, small boat rowing, small boat sailing, swimming, beach time, port visits, lectures, group games. Our professional staff members facilitate all activities, are trained in youth mental health first-aid, and are certified lifeguards.

Voyages typically begin at 0900 hrs on Monday in Vineyard Haven, MA, and end at 1100 hrs on Saturday in Vineyard Haven.

Sample Day Itinerary

0700 — Wake up
0715 — Deck wash, brass polishing, bunk inspection
0800 — Breakfast with a lesson on tides from the captain.
0900 — Goal setting with watch groups
1000 — Experiential games in rope use, anatomy of rope, and knots
1100 — Personal time
1130 — Begin preparations for sailing
1200 — Sailing
1300 — Lunch is served while sailing
1400 — Watch group instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on sailing lessons
1600 — Personal time while sailing
1700 — Ship anchors, sails and rigging are stowed
1730 — Swimming
1830 — Dinner is served
1930 — Watch-group reflection
2000 — Sea stories and poems from the Captain
2130 — Lights out

 

Booking

• A 50% deposit is required to reserve the ship.
• All reservations are first-come, first-serve.
• The remaining balance is due eight weeks before boarding.
• A minimum of 12 participants that can help sail the ship is required.
• Participants will be asked to help raise sails and weigh anchors.
• If the trip is canceled due to the charterer, Ocean Academy may allow the charterer to transfer their reservation to another date.
• If the trip is canceled due to extreme weather events or Ocean Academy’s reasons, the charterer will be offered a full refund.
